Aulis Jalkanen

1935 - 2023

Aulis Jalkanen was a self-taught folk artist from Suonenjoki, Finland.  His exceptionally abundant production consists of more than 5 000 titles: drawings,  paintings, graphics, sculptures, poems and music compositions.

Work and Art

Aulis Jalkanen worked on farms and also as a tree marker for forestry. Alongside with his work he studied picture making independently in a correspondence course and attended short courses at adult education centres. These deepened  his skills in creating compositions and atmospheres, using of colours as well as mastering and developing various techniques.

In his works of art Aulis Jalkanen often portrayed simple domestic life, people, animals and landscapes. Many of his works also arose from Finnish mythology and fantasy worlds, his  styles ranging from realism to cubism and even abstractism.

Forest was a great source of inspiration to Aulis Jalkanen. He was a nature lover enjoying outdoor life  and one of his hobbies was orienteering. He was an activist at the local sports club for orienteering and competed at national level even in Jukola relay. After his active period of orienteering, in the 1970s and 1980s, Jalkanen took part in mapping and drawing of orienteering maps.

The Map of Art

Inspired by graphic markings on orienteering maps Jalkanen created several abstract paintings.

Teamed up with the orienteering club Kuopion Suunnistajat the ITE-Aulis Society launches a T-shirt collection, The Map of Art, based on those paintings. The shirt designed for the 2024 World Cup Kuopio/ Finland  is black with print as shown in the picture. In 2025 there will be a new design to be launched for World Orienteering Championships Kuopio/ Finland.

An essential part of Jalkanen´s character as an artist was collecting – he collected stones, coins, etiquettes, tickets, magazines – most probably he would have started collecting The Map of Art -T-shirts as well

The Map of Art T-shirts are available for purchase in the sales area of the 2024 World Cup Kuopio and also in the online shop of WOC 2025 Kuopio from autumn 2024.

The ITE-Aulis Society was founded on 30 January 2023 with the purpose of preserving, maintaining and presenting the artistic and cultural heritage of Aulis Jalkanen as a whole: as the ITE-Aulis Home Museum.

The Home Museum is a treasure trove of art. Aulis’s art emphasizes sustainable way of life and recycling. The ITE- artist’s creativity in using all kinds of materials and the huge number of works are both touching.
